The acquisition of private jets
by Christian leaders
diminishes the moral voice
of the church in the fight
against corruption, the
Catholic Bishop of Sokoto
Diocese, Most Rev Matthew
Kukah, declared yesterday.
He spoke against the
backdrop of the presentation
of a private jet to the
National President of the
Christian Association of
Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo
Oritsejafor, by members of
his church during the
celebration of his 40th
anniversary in the ministry
penultimate Saturday.
Kukah, who was guest
speaker at the annual
Founder’s Day Anniversary
lecture of Providence Baptist
Church in Lagos, described
exhibition of such opulence
by church leaders as
embarrassing.
The fiery cleric who spoke on
‘Church and the state in the
pursuit of the common
good’, said: “The stories of
corrupt men and women
being given recognition by
their churches or mosques
as gallant sons and
daughters and the
embarrassing stories of
pastors displaying
conspicuous wealth as we
hear from the purchases of
private jets and so on clearly
diminish our moral voice.”
Kukah, who was represented
by the Administrator of Holy
Cross Cathedral Lagos, Rev.
Monsignor Pascal
Nwaezeapu, also expressed
displeasure with the
perceived closeness of the
CAN leadership to the
corridors of powers.
He said such alliance will
weaken the ability of the
church to speak the truth to
elected public office holders.
According to him: “CAN has
become more visible in
relation to national prayer
sessions, pilgrimages,
alliances with state power
and so on.
“Unless we distance
ourselves, we cannot speak
the truth to power. We
cannot hear the wails of the
poor and the weak. We
should not be seen as
playing the praying wing of
the party in power.”
He challenged the church to
speak against corruption in
low and high places, saying
such responsibility must
never be jettisoned for any
reason.
Apart from Orisejafor, other
church leaders who own
private jets include Founder
of Living Faith Ministries,
Bishop David Oyedepo;
General Overseer of
Redeemed Christian Church
of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch
Adeboye; Founder of The
Redeemed Evangelical
Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike
Okonkwo and Pastor Chris
Oyakhilome of Christ
Embassy Church.
At least 50 students are killed when a
train slams into their bus in Manfalut
city , state media says.
A speeding train has crashed into a
bus carrying children to their
kindergarten in southern Egypt , killing
at least 50 and wounding 17.
There were about 60 children
between four and six years old on the
bus when the crash occurred on
Saturday as the bus crossed tracks
near a village in Manfaloot district in
the southern province of Assiut.
" There are several deaths and injuries
among the pupils . They are being
counted and taken to hospitals ,"
Mamdouh al -Weshahi , a senior Health
Ministry official, was quoted as saying.
Al Jazeera' s Sherine Tadros , reporting
from Cairo , said: " The severity of the
wreckage was so bad that only 22
bodies or so came out in full and the
rest are in [pieces ]."
" That is why it 's difficult for the
rescuers to operate in the area ," she
said.
Books, school bags and socks
belonging to children were strewn
along the tracks near the mangled
bus. Parents of the missing wailed as
they looked for signs of their children
One witness said the train pushed the
bus along the tracks for nearly a
kilometre.
Two hospital officials said the
wounded were being treated in two
different facilities, many with severed
limbs .
An Egyptian official said it appeared
that the railroad crossing was not
closed as the train sped towards it . He
was speaking on condition of
anonymity because he was not
authorised to talk to the media .
President Mohamed Morsi has
ordered the prime minister , the
ministers of defence and health and
the governor of Assiut " to offer all the
assistance to the families of the
victims ", the MENA news agency said.
Transport Minister Rashad al -Metini
and the head of the Egyptian Railway
Authority have already resigned in the
wake of the accident, state media
reported .
Egypt 's railway system has a poor
safety record , mostly blamed on badly
maintained equipment , poor
management and reckless driving .

Eight Palestinians killed as Israeli
fighter jets hit Hamas government
compounds , tunnels and power
transformers.
Fresh Israeli air raids have killed at
least eight Palestinians in the Gaza
Strip and wounded dozens more ,
medics say , with Palestinian security
sources confirming that at least three
of the dead were Hamas fighters.
Israel on Saturday expanded its fierce
air assault on rocket operations ,
striking Hamas government and
security compounds , tunnels and
electricity transformers after an
unprecedented rocket attack on Friday
aimed at the holy city of Jerusalem
raised the stakes.
The Israeli army said that four of its
soldiers were injured by a rocket fired
from Gaza . Meanwhile , a newly
installed battery of Israel ' s Iron Dome
defence system successfully
intercepted a Gaza rocket aimed at Tel
Aviv on Saturday .
Palestinian medics said 40 Palestinians
have been killed and 345 wounded
since Israel launched the aerial
campaign against the Palestinian
enclave on Wednesday.
In the same period, three Israelis have
been killed and 18 injured , including
10 soldiers.
Since the start of its operation, Israel 's
army said it carried out some 700
airstrikes . It also said that fighters have
fired more than 580 rockets over the
border , 367 of which hit southern
Israel , and 222 of which were
intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-
missile system .
Israeli aircraft have continued
to pound weapons - storage facilities
and underground rocket- launching
sites.
