The acquisition of private jets
by Christian leaders
diminishes the moral voice
of the church in the fight
against corruption, the
Catholic Bishop of Sokoto
Diocese, Most Rev Matthew
Kukah, declared yesterday.
He spoke against the
backdrop of the presentation
of a private jet to the
National President of the
Christian Association of
Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo
Oritsejafor, by members of
his church during the
celebration of his 40th
anniversary in the ministry
penultimate Saturday.
Kukah, who was guest
speaker at the annual
Founder’s Day Anniversary
lecture of Providence Baptist
Church in Lagos, described
exhibition of such opulence
by church leaders as
embarrassing.
The fiery cleric who spoke on
‘Church and the state in the
pursuit of the common
good’, said: “The stories of
corrupt men and women
being given recognition by
their churches or mosques
as gallant sons and
daughters and the
embarrassing stories of
pastors displaying
conspicuous wealth as we
hear from the purchases of
private jets and so on clearly
diminish our moral voice.”
Kukah, who was represented
by the Administrator of Holy
Cross Cathedral Lagos, Rev.
Monsignor Pascal
Nwaezeapu, also expressed
displeasure with the
perceived closeness of the
CAN leadership to the
corridors of powers.
He said such alliance will
weaken the ability of the
church to speak the truth to
elected public office holders.
According to him: “CAN has
become more visible in
relation to national prayer
sessions, pilgrimages,
alliances with state power
and so on.
“Unless we distance
ourselves, we cannot speak
the truth to power. We
cannot hear the wails of the
poor and the weak. We
should not be seen as
playing the praying wing of
the party in power.”
He challenged the church to
speak against corruption in
low and high places, saying
such responsibility must
never be jettisoned for any
reason.
Apart from Orisejafor, other
church leaders who own
private jets include Founder
of Living Faith Ministries,
Bishop David Oyedepo;
General Overseer of
Redeemed Christian Church
of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch
Adeboye; Founder of The
Redeemed Evangelical
Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike
Okonkwo and Pastor Chris
Oyakhilome of Christ
Embassy Church.
At least 50 students are killed when a
train slams into their bus in Manfalut
city , state media says.
A speeding train has crashed into a
bus carrying children to their
kindergarten in southern Egypt , killing
at least 50 and wounding 17.
There were about 60 children
between four and six years old on the
bus when the crash occurred on
Saturday as the bus crossed tracks
near a village in Manfaloot district in
the southern province of Assiut.
" There are several deaths and injuries
among the pupils . They are being
counted and taken to hospitals ,"
Mamdouh al -Weshahi , a senior Health
Ministry official, was quoted as saying.
Al Jazeera' s Sherine Tadros , reporting
from Cairo , said: " The severity of the
wreckage was so bad that only 22
bodies or so came out in full and the
rest are in [pieces ]."
" That is why it 's difficult for the
rescuers to operate in the area ," she
said.
Books, school bags and socks
belonging to children were strewn
along the tracks near the mangled
bus. Parents of the missing wailed as
they looked for signs of their children
One witness said the train pushed the
bus along the tracks for nearly a
kilometre.
Two hospital officials said the
wounded were being treated in two
different facilities, many with severed
limbs .
An Egyptian official said it appeared
that the railroad crossing was not
closed as the train sped towards it . He
was speaking on condition of
anonymity because he was not
authorised to talk to the media .
President Mohamed Morsi has
ordered the prime minister , the
ministers of defence and health and
the governor of Assiut " to offer all the
assistance to the families of the
victims ", the MENA news agency said.
Transport Minister Rashad al -Metini
and the head of the Egyptian Railway
Authority have already resigned in the
wake of the accident, state media
reported .
Egypt 's railway system has a poor
safety record , mostly blamed on badly
maintained equipment , poor
management and reckless driving .

compounds , tunnels and power
transformers.
Fresh Israeli air raids have killed at
least eight Palestinians in the Gaza
Strip and wounded dozens more ,

sources confirming that at least three
of the dead were Hamas fighters.

air assault on rocket operations ,

border , 367 of which hit southern
Israel , and 222 of which were
intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-
missile system .

Sidhi Siddharth Sinune crawls behind the python
and shrieks in delight as it weaves through her
tiny legs.
While her parents are away working in the fields
in a rural Indian village in Maharashtra, the baby
girl pats the reptile and even playfully bites its tail.
The non-venomous snake could easily squeeze
Sidhi to death or swallow her whole.
But her father, Siddharth Sinune, said he cannot
afford to buy her toys – instead bringing home
his prey from his job as a snake catcher.
Before putting them back in the forests, he keeps
them at home for his only daughter’s
amusement.
Siddharth said: ‘Sidhi has an unusual bonding
with the snakes and surprisingly they too like to
play with her.
‘Being a poor farmer, I can’t buy her costly toys
but I can get her snakes to play with.

Dennis Avner was discovered dead at his
Tonopah home in Nevada. Avner was deemed
the worlds most modified human by the
Guinness Book of World Records back in
2008.
He said after speaking with a native American
chief he became inspired to ‘follow the ways
of the tiger.’ He held the record for the most
permanent transformations to look like an
animal.
He underwent 14 surgical procedures to
transform his face, ears and teeth into feline
features.The computer technician by trade,
and former Navy Veteran made himself look
like a female cat, with whiskers and ears to a
mechanical tail.
The cause of death has not yet been revealed,
but some are speculating that Avner may
have killed himself.
A pair of cruel sisters have been
jailed after they subjected a man
described as a “vulnerable adult” to
a degrading sexual assault and sent
photos of the abuse to friends on a
BlackBerry Messenger.
Twisted Yasmine, 19, and Whitney
Notice, 20, lured the man back to
their flat after meeting him over
social media.
After plying the 22-year-old victim
with cider, they threatened him
with a fake handgun, forced him to
strip and demanded he perform
sex acts.
Police were alerted to an image the
day after and specialists from the
Public Protection Unit were able to
track the images to Yasmine’s
phone.
Birmingham Crown Court heard
how the pair sexually humiliated
him purely for their own wicked
amusement.
Yasmine was sentenced to seven
years and two months behind bars,
while Whitney was jailed for five
years and four months.
Detective Constable Emma Fennon
said: “They targeted the man with
the express intention of humiliating
him for their own pleasure. They
even recorded the abuse and
boasted about their actions to
friends.
“In the video the man, who is a
vulnerable adult, can be seen
cowering, fearing for his life, whilst
the girls are heard laughing in the
background.
“We believe this may not have been
the first time they have carried out
such abuse as other images
discovered on their phones suggest
there could be more victims.
“If anyone has suffered such abuse
they should report it to police. The
matter will be dealt with sensitively
by officers specially trained to
support victims.”
Both sisters admitted assault, false
imprisonment, and causing a
person to engage in sexual activity
on February 3 this year.
Whitney also pleaded guilty to
possessing an imitation firearm.
The sisters were ordered to register
as sex offenders for life.

It is the country’s second oldest
storey building. Located in Ota,
Ogun State, the Cathedral
Church of Saint James (CCSJ)
boasts of a history that makes it
comparable to Westminster
Abbey in London. It was here
that Reverend Ajayi Crowther did
the first translation of the Bible
into the Yoruba language.
And what’s more, CCSJ still has
in its possession items that were
used by the very first occupants
of the building back in 1842. The
items include a chalice, a
baptism bowl, two altar chairs,
coins currency and other
historical curios.
The historical, ancient and
monumental items would have
been more, but Reverend Steven
Ayo Oluwawalemi, the cathedral
priest, admits that some
unknown people have made
away with most of these items
that should be national
treasures.
