Ability In Disability: Ivory Nwokorie Wins Second Gold Medal For Nigeria

Following the success of Yakubu Adesokan who
won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the on going
London 2012 Paralympics, Ivory Nwokorie has
added another medal to that tally by winning the
women’s 44kg Powerlifting gold. And the 33 year
old did it in style by lifting an incredible 109kg at
the South Arena 3 at ExCel today. Delighted by
her win, she enthused: ‘I’m very, very happy. I
have made my country proud’.
Despite failing to improve on her first lift, it
proved to be just enough to win her a gold
mdeal and Nigeria’s second in the powerlifting
events in two days.
The silver medal went to Cigdem Dede of Turkey
who managed 105kg on her second lift but was
slightly disappointed with her placing: ‘It would
have been better to have won the gold medal
but I am very happy to have won the silver.’
Ukraine took the bronze medal with Lydiia
Soloviova lifting 100kg on the first lift.
Congratulations to these true champions who
have shown that there is indeed ability in
disability.
