The Federal Road Safety Commission says 87 bodies, burnt beyond recognition at the scene of the petrol tanker disaster in Rivers State, have been given mass burial.

The bodies were buried at the scene of the accident in Ahoada West Local Government Area of the state.

The remaining six corpses, the commission says, were released to their families.

The fuel tanker had fallen in an accident early Thursday morning along the Ahoda-Mbiama section of the East-West Road.

Villagers had hoped to benefit from the free petrol leaking from the tanker when the combustion occurred; killing 93 and injuring 18.
